Whether you go for lanterns, ledge lights, down lights or sensor lights; outdoor wall lights are the icing on the cake that is your property. Okay, perhaps that sounds a bit fanciful but it's a fact that a well displayed, well-lit property not only looks good but is likely to be worth more than its poorly-illuminated neighbour.
Add to that the additional hours of use you will get from a well-illuminated garden, not to mention the increased pleasure of seeing all your hard work highlighted, and it simply makes sense to install some sort of lighting into your outdoor space. And it's true what they say, well planned garden lighting really does effectively add another room to your home. There are practical reasons for installing outside lighting too, not least of which is security. Well placed wall lights will illuminate any dark nooks and crannies where uninvited visitors might hide. Still on the functionality thread, no matter how well-maintained you keep your garden, there will be hazards out. From slippery paths, through crooked paving, to garden ponds it really is your responsibility to ensure that all such hazards are highlighted. Simple wall lights on the patio, or mounted onto the sides or risers of garden steps will go a long way to preventing accidents. And, if the worst happens and somebody does slip or trip, at least you have recourse in law to say that even though the hazard existed it was well defined. Garden lighting isn't just brilliant in the literal sense though - whatever the size of your patch be it a tiny courtyard or a country estate - there is no outside space that can't be improved by a well thought out lighting scheme. And where better to start than with wall lights? After all, if you've got a building of any sort, you've got walls! Outside dining areas tend to be close to the house for practical reasons - getting to and from the kitchen mainly - and lights placed on the wall in this area will set the mood for some great al fresco eating, as well as ensuring that you don't trip up the step while carrying drinks or hot food. By choosing well, these lights will also brighten up the dull brick wall and create a focal point. Despite what the home and garden magazines would have you believe, outdoor lighting isn't just for stylish, well-heeled folk living in Home Counties country homes, it's for everybody who has an outside space to call their own. And, particularly if you're on a restricted budget, a simple wall light or two is a very good place to start. Defy the night, the winter (and the rain if you have some sort of awning) with the simple installation of some outdoor wall lights. And, one little advertised fact is that, on a long winter's night when you're snug as a bug, a quick glimpse of your illuminated 'estate' through the windows will make it all worthwhile.
